US-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga is on course to equal the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) all-time record which stands at 18 goals.
The Malawian star’s rollercoaster pursuit took her tally to 17 goals, just a goal short of the record after scoring for her team Kansas City Current in a 1-1 draw against Gothan on Saturday.
Despite her team dropping two precious points, her feat was celebrated by KC Current in a post on their Meta Page, formerly Facebook Page.
Reads the post with pictures about her and her teammates: “Golden Boot leader leader. Temwa TC6 Chawinga is just two goals short of breaking the all-time @nwsl record for goals scored in a single season.#KCBABY.”
Temwa’s goal salvaged a point for the team after an own goal from Alan Cook in the 23rd minute
She has also opened a four-point lead over second-placed Zambia striker Barbara Banda who plays for leaders Orlando Pride.
According to the log tale, they have 43 points from 22 matches, 11 points behind Orlando and four below second-placed Washington Spirits while Gotham are third with 44 points.
Temwa said described her goal as mixed fortunes, saying dropping points was painful.
She also downplayed her prospects of breaking the all-time record on her debut season.
“Let’s take each game as it comes. We would like to push to finish second although we have qualified for national play-offs,” said Temwa.
