In a remarkable effort to tackle malnutrition in the country, University of Malawi (UNIMA) graduate Josephy Kachiya Banda through his SmartCare Consultancy has launched the ‘Thanzi Nutrition Project’.
In an interview, Kachiya Banda said the project, implemented in Nyasa Village, Chikwawa aims at improving the nutrition status of vulnerable groups, including young children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
He said the project was launched some weeks and has already shown promising results.
Kachiya Banda said the activities in the Project I include cooking demonstrations using locally sourced ingredients, training local people to produce fortified food products, and conducting nutrition assessments for young children.
“The project has produced a range of nutritious food items, including porridge, bread, pancakes, and chigumu, a local snack.
“These products are designed to address the nutritional needs of vulnerable groups and prevent health complications,” he said.
The nutritionist added that objectives of the Thanzi Nutrition Project are to improve the nutrition status of vulnerable groups, promote nutrition education and provide capacity building in rural communities.
He indicated that by providing nutrition education and training on food fortification using locally available ingredients, the project aims to address malnutrition in Malawi.
“By targeting vulnerable groups, the initiative seeks to improve their nutrition status and prevent health complications,” he added.
Kachiya Banda holds a Bachelor of Education (Human Ecology).
He graduated from UNIMA last year.
