These picturesque pillars provided the unique natural wonders that are regarded as a sacred place where villagers used to go with offerings as it is believed to be a place associated with spirits.

However, these magnificent pillars remain a valuable asset for the country that offer a remarkable natural wonder that showcases the beauty and diversity of Malawi’s landscapes and unique opportunities for tourism.

Its unique geological history, surrounding lush vegetation and stunning visual appeal, makes it a must-see destination for visitors from all over the world interested in exploring the beauty of nature; hence, remains the witness to a long history extending back thousands of years.

According to Leonard Paipi from Traditional Authority Stola, at first the place used to be called Kutchalichi Cha Mulungu by the ancestors because of what used to happen at this particular place.

Paipi added: “Malape remains a witness to a long history extending back thousands of years, making it an ideal place for various recreational activities. In the good old days, this place was so dangerous that if anyone would go to the place without the consent of the elders, he or she would never come back.

“In those old good days, while setting your steps on this place particularly at night, you could easily see light as if there was electricity. Not only that, again people would hear the sound of a drum, but without seeing the person beating the drum.”

On his part, Senior Chief Stola of Machinga described the Malape Pillars as a beautiful place with a rich history that offers an unforgettable atmosphere and convenient place for leisure and tourism.

He said as a traditional leader, he will strive to protect the beauty of this place and allow more travellers and visitors to come, as a way of boosting domestic tourism in the country.

“As chiefs we are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the area and make it possible for tourists to fully enjoy the serene and scenic surroundings through our dedicated efforts.

“We urge the government to consider strategies for improving the development of this iconic feature in order to promote tourism as an engine of economic growth for the country and preserve this famous historical and cultural place.”

The community leader said, by developing infrastructure and amenities suitable for tourists in the area, the country can generate significant revenue for the local community and boost Malawi’s tourism industry.
