PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER THRIVES IN FARMING, PLANS TO QUIT EMPLOYMENT

Dowa-based primary school teacher, Titani Banda is contemplating on quitting formal employment in take concentrate on what he has described as “profitable farming”.

The Standard 3 teacher at Mtenje Primary school ventured into farming last growing season to compliment his income.

Through a K10 million loan he obtained from the state owned National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF), Banda harvested over 247 bags of maize from a fourteen-acre land.

Out of the 247 bags, he sold 70 bags and used the proceeds to repay the loan.

He has told ProjectM in an interview that currently, he is planning to venture into entrepreneurship, saying he has seen that farming is more profitable than formal employment.

“I have been a teacher for over a decade now, but I have never made such money in a single year,” Banda said.

A visit by ProjectM at Banda’s farm saw a thriving enterprise.

“As you can see currently, I am into winter cropping, cultivating tomatoes and potatoes, which means I am not resting,” said Banda.

He said venturing into entrepreneurship has been one of the best decisions he has made.

Banda appealed to other teachers across the country to invest in business ventures.

Meanwhile, NEEF Chief Executive Officer Humphrey Mdyetseni has commended Banda for his exploits, saying the organisation is excited with the news.

“We are thrilled that through our loans, people are able to venture into entrepreneurship and make such profits,” he said.
