MACRA LOBBIES FOR INNOVATORS, ENTREPRENEURS AND CONTENT CREATORS INCENTIVES

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says it is pushing for the passing of the Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bill that will, among others, incentivise potential digital innovators.

The bill also seeks to incentivise content creators with both fiscal and non-fiscal support and encourage the development of local solutions to challenges faced by Malawians using digital technology.

MACRA spokesperson Bright Sonani has told ProjectM that if passed into law, guidelines contained in the bill will also help to establish a framework for promoting entrepreneurship and digital innovation in the country.

“As MACRA, we want Malawians to start benefiting from the use of the internet and most importantly, we want innovators and entrepreneurs to be well rewarded,” he said.

Recently, MACRA held meetings with various stakeholders to consult on the bill.

“Those consultation meetings were being done to solicit ideas following the public circulation and subsequent review of the bill by MACRA,” said Sonani.

For a long time, artists, entrepreneurs and innovators have been expressing worry over the continued absence of such guidelines, a development that has compelled MACRA to intervene.

Meanwhile, renowned content creator, actor and social media influencer who trades under the banner “Blesser Alufeyo” has commended MACRA for coming up with the bill, saying it will change the lives of artists in the country.
