The Sport Aid Malawi Project National Junior Tournament Kick start

62 top tennis players are participating in the National Junior Tennis Tournament taking place at the Ntcheu Catholic Sports Center.

The activity Is an inaugural Sports Aid for Malawi Project Under 12 and Under 14 Boys and Girl’s under the Sports Aid for Malawi Project.

The tournament includes 8 players from southern region (4 boys and 4 girls), 12 players from Central region (6 boys and 6 girls), 22 players from Ntcheu district (11 boys and 11 girls), 8 players from Zomba representing (4 boys and 4 girls), 10 players from Monkey Bay representing (5 boys and 5 girls) and the Northern Region has 8 players representing it (4 boys and 4 girls).

The Sports Aid for Malawi Project is a non-profit initiative dedicated to offer free sports opportunities to children such as Tennis, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, and Netball.

The project has two centers in Ntcheu and Monkey Bay, supporting sports like tennis, football, basketball, volleyball, and netball.

The project also supports 40 disabled children in Gumbu, Ntcheu.

The activities of the Sports Aid for Malawi Project are funded by Marco Bove and various Italian contractors.

Speaking in an interview Thomson Mtengula International Tennis Federation (ITF) national coordinator in Malawi, said the tournament will provide a platform for exposure for those with limited opportunities.

“This tournament comes at the right time as we have been struggling to find sponsors. The event will also help to assess players that will represent Malawi in Mozambique “, he said.

He also emphasized the need for more tournaments to help players gain the necessary experience to excel internationally.

The tournament started on Friday and will run until 22nd July

.
