18 YEAR-OLD BOY BUILDS SIMPLE INVERTER TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY

Victor Njobvu, an 18-year- old boy from Chiradzulu District, has developed a prototype of a simple inverter to generate electricity using a 3.7 Volts battery energy storage system of a power bank.

Njobvu, a form 3 student at Miracle High School in Blantyre says this project which he calls it ‘home electricity’ started in 2021 saying currently the system is creating potential energy from 3.7 volts to 230 Volts and is able to take basic loads such as lighting, phones, laptops, sound systems among others.

The Miracle High School student has told projectM that he has embarked on an extra-ordinary journey having seen that the growing percentage of the population in Malawi has limited access to essential necessities and services with many families lacking electricity.

Njobvu adds’’, theoretically, if you go around each and every District in the country particularly in rural areas, you find many families are in dire need of electricity and depend on torches and small solar panels to light their homes. This is what prompted me to take this remarkable initiative in generating electricity for my home area in Chiradzulu including many other places in the country.”

Providing an explanation of the tools and methods he employs to generate electricity, the young innovator, who wishes to become an engineer after completing his secondary education, has said that he uses different components such as IC’s, Ceramic, transistor and other tools which he said are being taken from an old radio adding that most of these tools can be found in local markets.

The Chiradzulu-based young enthusiast who is set to take his art practice to the next level has encouraged fellow colleagues to actively adopt a creative mindset which he believes can develop and improve their abilities through hard work and perseverance to achieve their goals.

‘’The Malawi vision 2063 is a transformational agenda that defines our aspirations and goals as a people. It is time for government to shift its focus towards promoting youth initiatives and by doing so they can play a vital role in combatting unemployment, fostering creativity and innovation thereby shaping a brighter future for our society’’, he said.

The story of Victor Njobvu remains a fascinating chapter whose determination and skill has captured the hearts and minds of everyone around him and this serves as a testament to the extraordinary and often unpredictable nature of human endeavors.
