YOUTH COUNCIL PROMISES TO SUPPORT YOUTH ENTREPRENEURS

The National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) says it will continue implementing strategies that will empower youths economically across the country.

The NYCOM has also stressed that it will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that more youths venture into entrepreneurship.

The council’s Director of Programs Williot Lumbe made the remarks Thursday in Lilongwe on the sidelines of an award ceremony targeting youth organisations that developed business concepts in a competition the council facilitated.

“We believe a lot of youths have the potential to become successful entrepreneurs. That’s why as a council, we are taking a leading role in unlocking funds for them,” he said.

During the ceremony, three youth organisations namely; Chimwemwe, Malenga and Mwansangu youth organisation, were awarded a total K10 million for pitching successful business ideas.

The three groups pitched ideas based on businesses they are implementing in their respective areas.

Mwansangu Youth Organisation based in Ntchisi, which emerged successful in the competition, said it will use the funds to purchase irrigation pumps in a bid to ramp up production.

The organization’s Executive director Joseph Banda thanked NYCOM for coming up with the initiative.

The organisations received K3.3 million each.

Funds for the project were sourced from GIZ through a project called “Empowering the youth through Agriculture”.
