Paramount chief Lundu of Chikwawa has hailed Illovo Sugar Malawi for bringing medical specialists to treat people with various illnesses in the district.
He made the remarks at Bereu in the district where the specialists provided medical services to the communities.
Paramount Chief Lundu told ProjectM that most people cannot afford to access specialists to treat them.
“People are poor and cannot manage to pay for treatment given by the specialists,” he said.
In his remarks, General Manager for Illovo Ricky Pillay said he believes that health people will make a healthy contribution to their communities.
He said people, who are sick, cannot effectively contribute towards the development of their areas.
“The provision of health care services to the surrounding villages to the sugar estate is very crucial,” said Pillay.
The general manager observed that most people in the communities cannot afford to travel to Blantyre for medical treatment.
One of the beneficiaries Margaret Bitoni concurred with Paramount Chief Lundu saying the locals are poor and can not afford to get the services of the specialists.
“We are very thankful for bringing the mobile clinic to the area,” she said.
Bitoni has asked the sugar company to continue bringing medical specialists closer to the communities.
