SPORTS COUNCIL LIFTS SPORTS SUSPENSION

The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has lifted the temporary suspension of all sporting activities following the tragic passing of Vice-President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight other officials on June 10, 2024.

In a statement, signed by chief executive officer Dr  Henry Kamata, said the council expressed its appreciation to sporting associations and affiliates for their respectful observance of the suspension.

The statement reads in part: “As we resume our sporting programes, let us continue to honour the memory and legacy of the departed souls by embodying the spirit of peace, unity and excellence in our endeavours.”

The temporary suspension was intended to allow the sporting community to mourn the late Vice-President and eight officials who served the country with passion and dedication.

The council suspended all sporting activities following a 21-day period of national mourning after the tragic plane crash in Chikangawa Forest, Mzimba District.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said they will announce the resumption of competitions under the association such as the Castel Challenge Cup, which was suspended during the period.

On his part, Sulom vice-general secretary Donnex Chilonga said they are yet to get communication on the resumption of the sports activities.

Silver Strikers feel they need time to prepare for the matches, considering that the ban on sports activities included training sessions.

The club’s chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba said: “We just started Tuesday. The boys started with aerobics after staying idle all this time.

“We just hope the Super League of Malawi [Sulom] will not rush to have fixtures this weekend. We need time to get in shape.”

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said while clubs need time to get in shape, this might affect the 2024 calendar.

On his part, Bullets chief administration manager Albert Chigoga said they will wait for communication from Sulom.
