NEW ORGANIC FERTILIZER HITS THE LOCAL MARKET

Farmers in the country can now afford a sigh of relief as a Lilongwe based youth organization, Youth Action for Success and Development (YASD) has started manufacturing organic fertilizer called “Kolora Organic fertilizer”, which is being touted as one of the best organic fertilizers being produced locally.

The fertilizer is being manufactured by mixing organic materials that are sourced locally.

YASD founder and executive director Edward Chidombe Msiska has told ProjectM in an interview that the organization came up with the innovation after noticing a gap in sustainable farming practices by local farmers.

“Our fertilizer is cheaper, affordable and reliable making it an ideal choice for farmers,” Msiska said.

The fertilizer can be applied in crops such as Maize, Tomato and other crops that require a lot of fertilizer.

“The other good thing is that our product is 100 percent organic, which means those using it cannot worry about damaging soil fertility or texture,” said Msiska.

The product has already hit the market and is being widely sold in Lilongwe and the surrounding districts at a minimum price of 25,000 kwacha per bag weighing 50 kilograms.

Msiska has added that plans are at an advanced stage to start distributing the product on an industrial scale.

One of the farmers who purchased the fertilizer in the just ended growing season, Tionge Mbulo has told ProjectM that the product performed wonders in her 4 acre field.

Agricultural expert and former Lecturer at Mwimba College of Agriculture, Island Mtambo has hailed the manufacturing of the fertilizer, saying it is going to help in pushing fertilizer prices down.
