ZOMBA TECHNOLOGY GENERATION CREATES AUTO-TURNING SYSTEM

A group of young men and women, under the banner of Zomba Technology Generation, has created an innovative auto-turning system using battery to generate electricity for irrigation.

The group’s team leader Cellina Juberg, who is pursuing Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Malawi (UNIMA), said the system distributes power from the 12 volts DC battery using locally available salt to provide electricity to households.

The 21-year-old UNIMA student said: “Essentially, these are two separate prospective projects whereby we have a system that will turn on automatically once there has been a condition satisfied. The other one is a battery using locally available salt.

“We do also have a fridge that does not use neither gas nor compressor. Fundamentally, we want to provide the best services possible for our community and become an essential tool to the problems affecting people in our community.”

Aged 21, from Eneya Village in Ntcheu, the young innovator adds that the group’s long-term goal is to come up with more technologies that can create new opportunities for growth, innovation and job creation for the youth.

She said: “We want to see our fellow colleagues to develop to the best of their abilities in a community in which everyone can depend fully on themselves.

“Much remains to be done to ensure that the socio-economic of our country and Zomba, among other things, offer local capacity building to enhance their capabilities in material production.’’

She, therefore, encouraged the youth in the country to develop an interest in science and technology and make their own discoveries.

Meanwhile, the young innovator has appealed to and the corporate world and individuals to help the organisation.
