In a bid to minimise the impact of climate-related disasters, a group of young women under the banner “Green Girls Platform” has started using drone technology to identify and map areas that are prone to natural disasters.
The operation is being done through a project called E-STEM.
Green Girls Platform executive director Joy Munthali believes the use of drone for mapping can protect the environment and help concerned stakeholders react swiftly to climate-related disasters such as floods.
Munthali said currently, the project is being implemented in Mitundu, Lilongwe.
“Through our mapping specialists, we are using drone mapping applications to identify threats, respond and prepare for upcoming climate-related disasters,” said Munthali.
She said the organisation also equips learners from some schools in Mitundu and Bunda on how they can use drones for mapping.
“Learners here are being equipped with knowledge on how they can fly drones and capture images from hard-to-reach areas and create a map of areas that require attention,” said Munthali.
The director added that the organisation’s goal is to continue using innovative ways of tackling unique challenges posed by climate change in Malawi.
The IM Swedish Development Partner Southern Africa has since described the initiative as innovative and transformative, urging Green Girls Platform to continue leading in the fight against environmental degradation.
