ESTHER GOMANI: AN INSPIRING TEENAGE SOCIAL WORKER

A 19-year-old Esther Gomani from Lilongwe has made a breakthrough in entrepreneurship, social work and education.

A graduate in Banking and Finance from the Malawi Assemblies of God University (MAGU) in Lilongwe runs a project dubbed “Eat and Learn” at the Madzi Christian Academy  in Mpingu in the outskirts of Lilongwe City.

Through the project, Gomani with her nine colleagues, established a school feeding programme targeting less-privileged learners.

She said the aim of the project is to create a conducive environment for learners to have the zeal for education.

“Eat to Learn Project is there to transform schools such as Madzi Christian Academy into thriving educational institutions where every child can have an opportunity to learn and grow without hindrance of financial constraints or hunger,” said Gomani.

She said the idea was conceived after noticing and hearing stories of hunger in some schools.

“I then applied for a grant which was granted under the Kids kindness grants programme run by the Kindness Grows here in December 2023,” said Gomani.

In January 2024, learners from Madzi Christian Academy became the first batch of learners to benefit from the grant.

Gomani has since vowed to continue sourcing more support for the less-privileged learners in the county’s schools.

“I personally believe a well-fed child is better equipped for learning,” she added.

Her vision is to see the school feeding programme expand to national level and partnering with other organizations in feeding less privileged learners.

Esther Gomani’s exploits have earned her special recognition by, among others, being elected leader of Africa Student Representative on the Executive Committee of the UNESCO SDG4 Youth and Student Network.

Youth rights activist Jackson Caesar has since described Gomani as an amazing woman.
