Amid rising calls for people to abandon the use of thin plastic papers, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources student, Christiana Rosha has invented biodegradable bags capable of replacing plastic bags.
The plastic bags can be used to pack food and non food items.
Speaking in an interview, Rosha, a fourth year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Environmental science, touted her invention as futuristic.
She usually use materials such as papers to manufacture the bags.
“The paper bags are biodegradable, which means they can not pollute our communities like other bags made of plastic,” Rosha said.
She added that she uses her entreprenuership skills to change the mindset of customers who use her bags.
“As one way of promoting the use of my bags, I provide discount to customers who frequently purchase my merchandise mainly for food packaging,” said Rosha.
Rosha, an action oriented young lady and ardent advocate for Environmental conservation has since implored Malawians to embrace her Innovation.
“If we continue using plastic bags, we are going to completely destroy our lakes, rivers and other water sources because most of these plastic wastes end in these water sources,” she added.
Her invention attracted the interest of renowned Environmental activist Clement Makuwa who described her bags as “eco-friendly”.
