Blantyre-based youthful entrepreneur, Owen Makwerusa has opened a company that specializes in toothpaste and body lotion production.
Makwerusa, 24, has told ProjectM in an interview that the company, Sukani Enterprise is on a mission to enhance customers’ health by harnessing the power of locally available resources.
He launched his dream in 2022 while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Dental surgery at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES).
He started producing products such as toothpaste, body lotion and activated charcoal while pursuing a certificate of registration from the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS).
In April 2023, the MBS granted him a certificate of registration, a development which prompted him to start distributing his products on a large scale.
“Since I was young, I’ve always harboured dreams of becoming an innovator and entrepreneur, a dream which prompted me to open this company,” said Makwerusa.
Located in Machinjiri, Blantyre, Sukani Enterprise produces and supplies products such as toothpaste, organic hair, skin lotion and activated charcoal powder, each bearing the hallmark of ‘Sukani”.
He said the company has also managed to establish a network of suppliers across the Malawi.
“Currently, I have managed to employ 4 people who oversee the day-to-day operations of the company while another team of part time workers oversee distribution of products,” said Makwerusa.
Asked on how he balances running the day-to-day operations at the company and school, Makwerusa said he usually sees the company as a school project since most of the concepts of the products are generated from what is taught in class.
He has since called on his fellow youths to be innovative and venture into entrepreneurship to become a successful.
His dream is to see Sukani Enterprise opening branches across Malawi and Africa.
