TRANSFORMING WASTE INTO ENERGY

In a bid to combat environmental degradation, Lilongwe based Area 36 Tingathe Organization has ventured into Biomass Briquettes production using waste products collected within the city.

The organization has also ventured into the business to provide an alternative and sustainable energy solution to the city’s residents.

The organization’s environmental officer Ruth Chimpala has told ProjectM in an interview that the exercise was launched after noticing a gap and people’s wish to try new and sustainable ways of cooking.

“We normally go around our community to collect waste products such as groundnut shells, maize husks and other waste products which we carefully process into briquettes,” Chimpala said.

The group which has 47 members, and produces 20 bags of briquettes per month.

On average the organization sells 5 bags per week at a price of 11,000 kwacha per bag.

“We currently feel like our production is lower because we are using manual ways of production,” said Chimpala.

The organization has since managed to establish a strong customer base in Area 36, Area 38 and Falls estate in Lilongwe.

The organization is also into sports development, Anti corruption activities and information communication technology programs.

The organization’s aim is to continue providing opportunities to youths for skills development, entrepreneurship and leadership.

One of the organization’s members, Ronald Gondwe has hailed the expertise he has gained since joining the group few months ago.

Meanwhile, environmental expert Tamara Taylor Nyirenda has commended the group for launching sustainable ways of energy which she says has a lot of benefits to users.
