The KAR pillar is a memorial pillar that was set as remembrance for the soldiers we lost during the first and second world war where it was reported that 19,000 soldiers died.
Soldiers from the KAR now Malawi Defense Force (MDF) participated in the battle field fronts of East Africa, Madagascar, Burma and Malaysian Emergency. Soldiers from the KAR took part in the Second World War which took place from 1939 to 1945 while others were also involved in the first world war from 1914 to 1918.
In most countries remembrance day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of the first and second world war hostilities which ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
And Malawi joins the rest of the world in observing the day which is popularly known as POPPY DAY by holding memorial service in Zomba, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
The pillar is engraved with names of veteran soldiers including those who took up the struggle during one of the most challenging period in the nations history.
Sergeant Major Aibu Chikwenga was one of the soldiers who served in the first battalion of the KAR and participated in the first and second world war.
The formation of KAR was done from 1898 to 1902.
